Data standardisation

In the wake of new evaluation methods and the use of AI in science, it is necessary to make data and associated metadata information available in a harmonised and machine-readable form. Among other things, documentation of data quality is essential in this regard.

Within the Underway Research Data project, the working groups are therefore working not only on uniform data preparation and standardised quality controls, but also on harmonising metadata and optimising its provision in order to make it available to a broader user group.

Physical and biogeochemical measurements

The quality of data from permanently installed oceanographic equipment on German research vessels is ensured by experts. Workflows have been developed for this purpose and are documented in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The work of these data stewards includes providing data in near real time, sensor monitoring, quality control in delayed mode based on international standards, establishing reference sample concepts, and standardising data set formats for each device.

Bathymetry

Scalable workflows ensure the provision of bathymetry data, which is regularly collected by permanently installed multibeam echo sounders on German research vessels. These were developed by the ‘Bathymetry’ working group of the ‘Unterwegs’ research data project and documented in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The work includes the publication of raw data (including water column data) in the PANGAEA data repository in ‘delayed mode’ immediately after the research voyage. In addition, the project publishes so-called ‘legacy’ raw data that was saved in the past but not published. The published data sets are also visualised using standardised processes, taking into account all CC-BY-published data sets in PANGAEA.
