A look at marine research at the Citizens’ Festival celebrating German unification in Bremen:

The deep sea, coral reefs, polar ice, and climate research: At the public festival celebrating German Unity Day, various research institutions from Bremen and Bremerhaven will jointly showcase the wide range of research being conducted in the state of Bremen. From October 2 to 4, they invite visitors to discover, marvel, and participate at the former Galeria Kaufhof building in downtown Bremen. Around 400,000 visitors from the region and all over Germany are expected to attend the main celebrations, which are being hosted this year by the state of Bremen.

The state of Bremen is one of the most important centers for marine, polar, and climate research in Germany. At the public festival celebrating German Unity Day, six institutions will come together to showcase the research being conducted in these fields in the state of Bremen and highlight how closely the institutes and various research areas are interconnected.

Under the motto “Bremen Marine, Polar, and Climate Research—Strong Together,” the five institutes and the Alliance are showcasing their work at “BREMENwelt Wissenschaft” on the ground floor of the former Galeria-Kaufhof building and invite people of all ages to experience science up close. Participating institutions include the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM), the Institute for Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen, the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen, and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology.

At the Marine and Climate Research booth in the “Science Department Store,” the DAM is presenting the Interactive World Ocean, which invites visitors to dive in and discover the wonders of the seas: Interested visitors can try out the new diving tours, go on a treasure hunt with Dumbo the octopus, or solve crossword puzzles on marine themes. We look forward to welcoming many ocean enthusiasts to our booth—and people who want to become ocean enthusiasts.
