STORING CARBON DIOXIDE UNDERGROUND: OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS OF A CONTROVERSIAL CLIMATE TECHNOLOGY

The CDRmare research mission invites you to an informative evening and panel discussion with leading German climate scientists in Hanover’s royal riding arena “Cavallo” on March 13, 2024.

The DAM research mission “Marine Carbon Sinks in Decarbonisation Pathways” investigates whether and to what extent the ocean can play a significant and sustainable role in the absorption and storage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In addition, connections with and effects on the marine environment, the earth system and society will be determined.

Leading scientists will discuss these and other pressing issues relating to carbon capture and storage (CCS) with interested members of the public at the CCS information event at Cavallo. The event will begin with short presentations by the scientists. The three experts will then answer questions from the audience. The following experts will be present:

  • Dr. Felix Schenuit, political scientist and expert on European climate policy at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs and researcher in the synthesis and transfer project of the CDRterra research network, CDRSynTra
  • Prof. Dr. Klaus Wallmann, geologist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and head of the CDRmare research network GEOSTOR for the storage of CO2 deep under the German North Sea
  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Daniela Thrän, expert for bioenergy systems at the Environmental Research Center Leipzig and head of the CDRterra research network for the multi-stage assessment of bio-based negative emission technologies (BioNET)

Admission is free. A video stream of the event will be broadcast live on the internet (details soon on cdrmare.de/en). There will also be a recording that’s available online later.

*Event is held in German
