Update on Marine Mineral Resources
Since 2016, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) has been providing updates in an annual newsletter on the status of its exploration work on manganese nodules and massive sulfides in the two German license areas in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The current issue reports, among other things, on the environmental monitoring activities related to the collector tests conducted last year in the manganese nodule belt in the eastern Central Pacific, the status of the development of mining regulations and the latest developments at the most recent session of the International Seabed Authority, the status of the most recent exploration cruises in the Indian Ocean, and innovative new research approaches aimed at extracting the metals contained in deep-sea ores in the most environmentally sound manner possible.
