The Ocean Surface Layer in a Warming World

The Strategy Group on Ocean Circulation and Climate has published a new research paper outlining a strategic initiative for the German oceanographic community beyond the year 2026. The paper calls for concerted research on the ocean surface layer—the well-mixed layer that governs the exchange between the ocean, the atmosphere, and sea ice. Despite its central role in climate regulation, carbon uptake, and marine ecosystems, key processes in this layer remain poorly understood and are systematically underrepresented in global climate models. The initiative proposes a three-pronged approach that combines targeted in-situ observations, process modeling, and remote sensing in five focus regions: tropical upwelling zones, the Arctic Ocean, the subpolar North Atlantic, the Southern Ocean, and marginal seas such as the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. A particular focus is on the dynamics of submesoscale fronts—small-scale ocean processes that play a crucial role in the redistribution of heat, carbon, and marine biomass but are not accounted for in the IPCC’s current climate reports.

The results are intended to improve climate projections, support carbon sequestration efforts, and generate data products relevant to maritime safety, pollution monitoring, and ecosystem management.
